Why do I need to sift flour for cake making?
Sifting flour helps to remove lumps, aerate the flour, and ensure an even texture. This gives cakes a lighter crumb and more consistent rise.
What’s the difference between a sieve, sifter, and strainer?
A sieve is ideal for sifting flour or removing bran; a sifter adds air and breaks up lumps; a strainer helps achieve ultra-smooth custards and sauces.
Can I wash these in the dishwasher?
Even though many of the sieves are made from stainless steel, it is best not to dish-wash them as the mesh is very fine and prone to damage from the chemical detergents.
Which size is right for me?
For bagged flour, a small 18–20cm sifter works well. For batches or mill-fresh flour, step up to a 30cm drum sieve for faster processing.
