Artisan Head Baker for Ludlow Food Centre

Located just outside the beautiful market town of Ludlow in Shropshire, Ludlow Food Centre was recently crowned the best Farm Shop in the country. We make everything from cheese and ice cream to bread, cakes and gourmet ready meals. We have won more awards than we can count, including; World’s best marmalade, best blue cheese in Britain, best bacon, best sausage, best Butcher. You’ll hear the word best quite a lot round here, and now were looking for the best Baker!

We need an extremely passionate individual to lead our Artisan Bakery team, review and grow our range of real bread, cakes and patisserie and ensure they are the very best they can be day in day out.

Reporting to the Production Manager your primary responsibility will be to ensure the bakery range is made to production schedules in a timely, safe and consistent manner. As Head Baker you will also be responsible for management and motivation of your team, team training, allocation of duties, stock control, kitchen hygiene, and new product development.

Being the Best Farm Shop in Britain, we naturally attract media attention. Our team regularly feature in the press for unique products, awards and our ‘estate to plate’ story. This job will also give you the opportunity for exposure and creating a name for yourself. The ideal candidate, driven by passion and knowledge, will take the Bakery forward as if it were their own.

You will have previous experience working with ‘real bread’ artisan production methods and also be proficient at cake baking and patisserie. You will also have a strong and passionate core food knowledge, be able to work under pressure and have a commitment to delivering high standards. Live in accommodation could be made available.

Head Baker - Artisan Bakery – Job Specification



Head Baker to organise production, team and supplies to deliver high quality artisan products to the expected standards in a timely and professional manner.



At least 2 years experience in an artisan bakery and hand craft baking techniques. Knowledge of Health & Safety. Proven knowledge of Bakery and Patisserie production and management systems is expected.



  • Ability to perform all duties with attention to detail, speed and accuracy
  • Ability to exert physical effort in a time-bound environment (8 hour shift)
  • Ability to supervise a team of at least 3-4 people (train, plan, and supervise)
  • Ability to work within a team and multi-task
  • Ability to act in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all staff members
  • Deck oven expertise



Creative Mindset, Dynamic, Motivated, Organised, Patient and Responsible



  • Prepare all the necessary production and MEP lists, working towards production schedules, as set out by the Production Manager
  • Assist with developing new product ranges
  • Organise staff schedules, holiday requests and daily breaks
  • Assist bakers with preparing dough and shapes according to company standards as well as prioritising all dough preparations according to production schedule
  • Communicate thoroughly during production with all staff to ensure an excellent quality product; monitor quality control at all stages of production
  • Monitor oven temperatures for perfect baking times, moisture and texture
  • Ensure packing staff and area are well prepared for respective duties
  • Maintain all equipment in perfect condition and report maintenance issues as needed
  • Order supplies as necessary, using correct forms and working practices
  • Carry out any other tasks necessary to ensure a smooth flow of operations
  • Ensure Health & Safety standards are met before the end of every shift and implement safety regulations
  • Ensure there is respect in the team working environment by nurturing positive relationships and cooperation
