Stir is an independent and locally owned coffee shop in the CB4 neighbourhood of Cambridge. It is the social hub of the area – a place for people to meet, connect, re-charge but also a place where you can escape and unwind. At 2,000 sq ft, with 120 covers inside and nearly 50 covers outside, we have lots of space to meet the needs of the diverse customer base we now serve.

We have an incredible food menu and drinks range, which has helped make Stir a great success. We serve coffee from Butterworth & Son, a specialist roastery based in nearby Bury St Edmunds, and use local suppliers across our full food offering. We support our great food and drinks range with unparalleled customer service.

Despite only being open for just over a year, we were named Coffee Shop of the Year 2016 in the Cambridge Food & Drink Awards. We were also chosen by La Marzocco as one of their 32 'best coffee shops in Europe' and featured alongside them at the London Coffee Festival. We have been the subject of several great articles, including being one of only 3 coffee shops in the UK to be mentioned by name in The Sunday Times 'Best Places to Live' Guide and being featured in the prestigious Caffeine Magazine.

We have just taken over retail premises next door to Stir and will be opening a Stir Bakery early in 2017. Whilst a key role of the bakery will be to supply Stir with the sourdough bread, brioche buns, pastries and cakes that are currently sourced from various local suppliers, the bakery will also act as a standalone retail outlet offering a full range of bakery items to the public, as well as supplying local businesses in due course.

Our success with Stir has shown there is a gap in the market in affluent Cambridge for high quality, artisan products, supported by great customer service. Informal research conducted to date gives us confidence that the Stir Bakery will be a great success.



We are seeking a Head Artisan Baker for the Stir Bakery.

This is an amazing opportunity to shape a bakery almost from scratch, whilst having a guaranteed source of demand. The short timescale against this job advert is so that the successful candidate can get involved in helping design the layout of the bakery, select the equipment to be used and lead the recruitment of the team.

We are looking for someone with experience of artisan bread-making and pastry production, who has created their own recipes. We want the Stir Bakery to be famous for some signature menu items but also be a place to discover new products and tastes, so we want someone who is bursting with ideas and keen to experiment.

You will be the ‘face’ of Stir Bakery and will be expected to interact with customers so we must be confident that we bring someone on board who will demonstrate the famous Stir customer service has been extended to our bakery. You will need to be passionate about what you do and be able to generate that same passion in your team members, as well as provide them with the practical training and development they need.

This will be a small team to start with so you must be comfortable with doing all the jobs needed in a bakery, including the more mundane ones such as hygiene maintenance, stock control and rota planning. We also anticipate that the bakery will be busy from day one, so being able to work well under pressure is an absolute necessity..
