The old "king of grain..." (Ellis 1774), Red Lammas is the classic red winter milling landrace wheat of England from the Tudor period to Napoleonic wars. Red Lammas also known by many other names such as Old Kent Red, Old Burwell and Red Fire (due to its red straw, ear and kernels), this was the classic red winter milling landrace wheat for bread making of England from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Red Lammas was a successful bread wheat but, like many older strains grown in UK, fell into disfavour after the Napoleonic Wars as UK became an importer rather than exporter of bread wheat and replaced its own crops with wheat grain more suited to animal fodder and biscuit making, that is, higher volume rather than quality.(ref wheat-gateway.org.uk).
